Kihei is know for it's drier climate, and having less wind than Lahina and Kaanapali, which make beach days more enjoyable. It has more of a local vibe. Wailea with it's shops and restaurants is the next town over, if you are craving more of a resort vibe.

Sightseeing

The road to Hana is unforgettable. It is an all day trip, and can be accessed on a tour, or with your own vehicle. I recommend getting a guide book so you know what you are looking for at each stop along the way. The road is windy and narrow, but the scenery is amazing and worth checking out.

Also a day trip, pack jackets, the elevation gain will cause temperatures to drop. The views are incredible from this dormant volcano.
