In winter, particularly, this is the place to watch the starlings' murmurations - they swoop around the coast before roosting under the pier. Go an hour before sunset and marvel. Otherwise, deckchairs are free and it's a place to sit if you don't mind pier radio. The rides are expensive, the views are good to the east and west.

See the boats, sit in a cafe on a warm day. Starlings roost under Wetherspoons and the sound of their singing just before sunset is something astonishing. The BBC's recorded them for its archive. Walk from the Marina along the Undercliff towards Ovingdean's little beach cafe or stand on the sea wall to take in the white cliffs. On a good day, you can walk along the sea wall, past the fishermen. The shopping's pretty grim unless you need essentials at Asda.
