Lyall Bay is a sandy beach, great swimming, surfing, kite-surfing, paddle-boarding, walking taking in the fresh ocean air or sit in Spruce Goose or Maranui and people watch.

Behind the house (turn right out of the house and right at the corner) you will find entry onto the Southern walkway (PINK SIGNS- the walks up through the bush are not too strenuous inter-connecting tracks. The 1st PINK sign is about 10min follow these they will take you right through to Oriental Parade, up to Mount Victoria lookout or cut down Marjoriebanks st and head into Cuba street area. The filming of The Lord of the Rings trilogy happened up here and there are several discreet signs. Apparently this was the location where the Hobbits hid while being chased by Ringwraiths. If you turn left out of the house walk to the end of Coromandel st and walk this way to the ocean-Houghton Bay.
