MUST SEE INSIDE Amazingly detailed historic restoration venue for events of all types. Gloriously built in 1929, by mid-century was the Fox Granada theater and the interior was green-washed with pastel paint. My first job was selling movie tickets in the mid 1960s in the tiny booth. I earned 75¢/hr. I loved that job, but calculators hadn't been invented yet and I was fired because I couldn't correctly do the math required for the nightly report. In the 1990s our H.S. had a heartbreaking tour of the ruinous shambles it had become through abandonment, neglect and vandalism. Thanks to a group of citizens who rescued it from demolition and restored a gem in Emporia’s historic crown.

Enchanting riverside park with expanses of luscious green among grand old trees, fabulous WPA stone structures and a lake. A circular wall around a stone tower was Monkey Island in mid-century. We loved to watch monkeys through the high fence across the mote now gone. There are plenty of picnic table shelters, a new splash pad, DISC GOLF COURSE, TENNIS COURTS, modern playground, an old stone bridge and amphitheater. It’s one of my all-time favorite city parks. Be sure to visit the lakeside patio with William Allen White’s bust and editorial. In 1926-7 the White family gave 52 acres to the city of Emporia in Mary’s memory, because like Peter Pan, Mary didn't want to grow up.

"...the oldest courthouse in the Midwest still in daily use. Completed in 1873...built from native limestone that was quarried and hand-cut in the Flint Hills. The limestone blocks were then brought to the Courthouse by horse-drawn wagons; some stones weighed nearly seven tons.
