Food Scene

The 1400 Grill and Bar is our favorite place to go for a juicy burger and fries, or an amazing Reuben sandwich, or anything else on the menu. Huge portions, friendly staff, fair prices, and only a block away. If you like spicy food, try a side order of fried pickled jalapeños.

This is a classic "dive" Chinese restaurant with cooked meats hanging in the window, but it's the best Cantonese restaurant in Chinatown. Try the Barbecue Pork Chow Mein, or Shrimp Fried Rice, or Singapore Rice Noodles if you're a curry fan.

For a different type of Chinese food, try Sichuan cuisine that's famous for its "numbing" spicy dishes (the spice actually numbs your tongue!). This restaurant has slow service, but it's always packed because the food is so good.

Trader Joe's is our favorite grocery store because it has high quality local and imported foods for very good prices. It's a great place for wines, cheeses, breads, and snacks as well as everyday food.

Shopping

Our local farmers' market happens every Tuesday and Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm. Decent prices on delicious, fresh local produce, flowers, and often fun ethnic foods too. If you go towards the end, between noon and 1 pm, some stands offer lower prices to sell off their wares!

Getting Around

Catch the ferry from here to San Francisco. The ferry is a lovely boat ride across the bay, and the easiest way to get to Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf without having to fight traffic and parking issues.

This is a little farther away than Lake Merritt BART station, but all trains headed from the East Bay area to San Francisco pass through this station. Unfortunately the neighborhood is not great, but this station and its parking lot are generally safe.
