Parks & Nature

The rain forrest is definitely worth visiting, whether to just drive inside it or to hike or swim in the waterfalls. It’s about 1hr away by car and there is free parking inside. The Luquillo food kiosks, located right outside the rainforest have great local food. The Luquillo beach is also very nice with super calm water.

Culebra is an islands off of the coast of Puerto Rico worth visiting. You can get there by taking a 20 minute flight from SJU (about $125 each) , or drive to Fajardo (1hr drive) and take the ferry which will be $5 round trip, plus parking at Fajardo which is about $15. The ferry does sell out so arrive early. If you miss the ferry you can always take the plane but it’s an expensive mistake (that we’ve made and hope not to make again). The best thing to do in Culebra is to go for the day, rent a jeep there for $50 and check out all of the different beaches, starting from Playa Flamenco. Make sure to bring towels, sunblock, water, snacks, and bug spray. The restaurants in Culebra are limited.

The best thing to do in Vieques is to spend 1 night at the W hotel there. Though it is very expensive (typically about $300/night plus food and drinks) it is a remarkable place set on a very beautiful property The nightly price includes some water activities like paddle boarding but doesn’t include food and drinks. The best scuba diving in Puerto Rico is done by a company called Sea Ventures, which operates daily from Marina Del Rey in Fajardo. The trips usually sell out so if you’re interested in doing this, call them to book on your first day in Puerto Rico. Scuba diving is highly weather dependent so check the forecast before booking. There is usually a morning trip and an afternoon trip each day. The weather is usually better for the morning trip, but that’s a very early wakeup at about 5am since you have to be in Fajardo by about 7:30am for the morning dive.

Just to the west of the unit is Parque Barbosa where there are basketball courts, a soccer field, a running track, a childrens' playground and tennis courts (may be reserved by visiting the tennis center on site) . In addition, all along the ocean to Condado is a great place to go for a run.
