Bellac is a small market town. The 13th century stone arched bridge across the tranquil River Vincou is a good place to have a view across the town. Heading into Bellac itself you will see numerous ancient houses, dating from the 15th to 17th centuries, with the remains of part of the original defensive walls of the town. Among the notable religious monuments in the town is the 12th - 15th century Church of Notre-Dame boasting elements of both roman and gothic style architecture. Oradour-sur-Glane is a rather haunting commune in the Haute-Vienne department in the Limousin region in west-central France. The original village was destroyed on 10 June 1944, when 642 of its inhabitants, including women and children, were massacred by a German Waffen-SS company. A new village was built after the war on a nearby site but on the orders of the then French president, Charles de Gaulle, the original has been preserved and maintained as it was left in 1944 as a permanent memorial with a really interesting museum about the tragedy of the village in WW2.
