At the forest service you can get maps to the trails in the mountain range that overlooks Anchorage. A favorite hike is up to the peak called "Flattop". From the peak you can see the entire Anchorage bowl. It is not faint of heart but a "must do" for the fit and adventurous.

Sightseeing
This is Alaska's number 1 ski resort, which is nestled in an arts community. The drive from Anchorage to Girdwood is breath taking. You get a view of the fjords, you see mountain goats on the cliffs above the highway. You can stop at the point and see beluga whales and watch the bore tide roll in. It is a beautiful drive and Girdwood is a great place to hike and take the chairlift to the top of the mountain for a view of the valley below.
