There are three that make it unique: First, its extraordinary artistic heritage, which makes it the largest public collection in Latin America. Among its more than 12,000 pieces, two collections stand out: the collection of nineteenth-century European art, considered the most important in the region, and the collection of Argentine art, beyond any doubt the most valuable of its kind worldwide.

The museum has its origins in a marriage in 1897 between two prominent members of turn-of-the-century Argentine high society: Matías Errazúriz, the son of Chilean émigrés, and Josefina de Alvear, the granddaughter of Independence-era leader Carlos María de Alvear.
The couple commissioned French architect René Sergent in 1911 to design a mansion for Errazúriz's future retirement from the diplomatic corps, in which he had been Ambassador to France for a number of years. The ornate Neoclassical structure inspired the Bosch family to commission a similar palace nearby (today the United States Ambassador's residence). Completed in 1916, the couple devoted the following two years to decorating th

Occupying an entire city block, the Palacio de Aguas Corrientes (Palace of Running Water) was built in the second half of the 19th century to supply the city's water. Following the city's rapid expansion and several epidemics, including cholera and thyfoid, it was decided to introduce a modern running water system, following designs put forward by British engineer John Bateman. The construction of the 'palace' was overseen by Swiss engineer Carlos Nyströmer and Norweigian architect Olof Boye, between 1887 and 1894. It features French-style mansard rooves, and a facade that consists of 170,000 glazed tiles and 130,000 enameled bricks, all sh

Ricardo Rojas has been an Argentine writer, poet, playwright and politician. His house has been given by his wife to the Museum foundation, together with a valuable collection of objects and a library. The façade, with an American colonial style, resembles the House of Tucumán, flanked by two Salomonic columns and iron-bordered windows. The interior of the house exhibits a religious painting from the Cuzco school, furniture, carpets, and a great quantity of decoration objects, documents and antique books.
