It's only 45 minutes on the Ferry from Cairns. It's a great alternative to going to the reef (especially when the weather is windy or the sea is rough). It's got lots of activities like swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, hiking, scuba. It's good for families or people that don't swim or dive and just want to enjoy a pretty island or sit on the beach.

The Boulders is a popular locals swimming spot and picnic area amid tropical rain forest in the foothills of the Bellenden Ker Range. It is named for a series of granite outcrops found along Babinda Creek, which provides cascades and swimming holes.
Take a picnic with you and your swim things, there are also nice walks to explore - there can be the big March Flies in the summer, so take some repellent too (they are quite slow and easy to swot, but they will bite if you don't swot them quickly).
