The remains of this vast ancient city are as extensive as those of Olympia and Epidavros, yet Ancient Messini receives only a fraction of their visitors. Picturesquely situated on a hillside below the village of Mavromati and still undergoing excavation, the site comprises a large theatre, an agora (marketplace), a sizeable Sanctuary of Asclepius and one of the most impressive Ancient Greek stadiums. Entry includes the small museum at the site turn-off; don't miss the impressive Arcadian Gate 800m beyond, either.

This perfect sandy crescent with clear waters is presumed to be Homer’s ‘sandy Pylos’, where Telemachus was warmly welcomed when he came to ask wise old King Nestor the whereabouts of his long-lost father, Odysseus, King of Ithaca. Follow the signs to Paleokastro and walk the lagoon-side track labelled 'Nestor's Cave' from the Paleokastro car park (20 minutes) or approach by road from the village of Petrohori, 6km north of Gialova off the road to Chora.

Neda River crosses an impressive 32 km long gorge with forests, narrow passages, and numerous points with waterfalls where small natural lakes with crystal clear water are formed. According to Greek mythology, Neda was a nymph, a water goddess and Zeus’s nourishment. The gorge of river Neda is a natural wonder of the Messinian countryside with a constantly varying landscape, lush and turquoise waters and majestic cliffs. An ideal setting for a wonderful outdoor experience! Endlessly flowing waterfalls create crystal clear ponds that lead into the main river and continue rapidly their course to the sea.

This short 1-mile (1.6 km) trail leads to the iconic lighthouse at Cape Tenaro, also known as Cape Matapan, the second most southern point in mainland Europe (after Cape Tarifa in Spain) and the southernmost place on the Greek mainland. The trail starts from the parking at the end of the paved road with the archaeologically interesting ruins of the Death Oracle of Poseidon Tainarios, God of the sea, not just for sailors. There are many faint traces of ancient houses and port fortifications cut into the rocks along the way. Today, the only other inhabitants, particularly in winter, are a few cows.

Venetian castle in Koroni and famous castle on the southwestern tip of the Peloponnese was the 7th AD century and was rebuilt and expanded by the Venetians in the 13th century. Over the next centuries the city flourished, but was constantly the apple of discord between Venetians and Turks. The fortress of Koroni is the only one which is still inhabited in recent days.

The islets located to the south and west of the coast of Messinia in Greece are not well known to the public, but they hide their own surprises, with Sapienza being the most typical example among them. Sapienza is located on a maritime route which, since ancient times, was of great commercial and strategic interest, as it connected Italy with the Middle East. At the same time, however, it was also a difficult area, full of strong sea currents, strong winds and difficult rocks. As a result, several shipwrecks occurred on the coasts and off the island, some of which are considered important from an archaeological point of view. The exceptional findings found in them make the Methoni marine area one of the most important underwater archaeological sites.
