Food Scene

Hipster coffee shop, just around the corner. Celebrity sightings. Expensive coffee, chocolate, snacks. People either love or hate this place. We vector between the two. Great design.

WE LOVE BOLTON'S. Nashville Hot Chicken and Spicy Fish. This is one of the original Hot Chicken places in Nashville. Eat in or take out. Until recently it was literally a concrete shack; now they have build a nicer, bigger shack behind the original one.

Good BBQ. Not as good as Martin's, which has multiple restaurants, including one downtown. Martin's is insanely good. Edley's is not insane, but it's good, and it's closer.

Our absolute favorite local place. The original farm to fork. Lots of people save a trip to Margot for a special occasion, but we like to go sit at the bar and eat just because it's so good. Wonderful friendly staff, and usually Margot will step out of the kitchen to say howdy.

One should hate hipster tacos out of principle. But you can't hate Mas Tacos because it's really awesome. Fish tacos, fried avocado tacos, and the sopa de pollo are particularly good. Not far at all, but we usually drive because it's not a particularly scenic walk. Right across the street is Holland House Bar & Refuge. It's more upscale but also very good. IMHO the drinks are better than the entrees. Also across the street is Pharmacy. It's a burger place and beer garden. It's always got a line, but not sure why; we aren't impressed.

This terrific Charleston restaurant opened up in our 'hood a few years ago. It's fabulous and relatively casual, which we like. If you want to go fancier, cross the river and go to Husk, which also started in Charleston (under revered Nashville chef Sean Brock). Husk will be one of the best places you have eaten in your life. And seriously, it's not THAT expensive - particularly given its quality.

A drive across town, but worth it. One of two eateries run by James Beard Award winner Maneet Chauhan, who also just won Food Network's Tournament of Champions. In addition to having amazing food and drink, the place is super fun and the decor will make you happy. Her other restaurant is Chauhan's Ale and Masala House, also great.

If your party can't agree on what to eat, go here, just a few blocks away. A food hall with Vietnamese, burritos, grilled cheeses, local baked goods and coffee, etc. Everything is good.

THE BEST LOCAL BAKERY EVER. Locally owned and operated by Ellen and Dan. If you want to seem in the know, go in and order the breakfast sandwich (egg/cheese souffle on a scone) by saying "one to go." Or two, or three, because they're really good. They also have delicious baked goods of all sorts, and lunch things too (the "Mamachilada" enchilada pie is nuts). Quick walk to Ordway and 16th. Not open M,T, and open only until 1pm. Long break in August.

East Nashville's original hole in the wall. There is nothing fancy about this place. Cheap beer and good burgers.

Right around the corner, cocktails in a beautiful little VIctorian that opens onto a backyard crazytown dance party. Insanely popular right now: has it jumped the shark? Not yet IMO.

I'm in it for the pizza. I'm not a beer drinker but folks who are love their beer. I love the blistered-crust pizza with creative toppings.

Sightseeing

Honky Tonks and museums. Live music 24/7. Way too much to summarize here! The classic, and the best IMHO, is Robert's Western World. Tootsie's Orchid Lounge obviously is awesome too, steeped in history. There's so much more to Downtown than the "Lower Broad" honky-tonk district, though - be sure to check out current listings.

The History of Nashville and Tennessee designed in a walk-able park. Including a splash pad. It's right up next to the Nashville Farmer's Market, a permanent site with lots of delicious food and (particularly on weekends) local farmers' goods and crafts. Next to that is the brand-new Tennessee State Museum and Historical Archives. Free and has some great exhibits - check out the excellent current exhibit on Tennessee's crucial role in ratification of the 21st Amendment giving women the right to vote.

Shame on you if you leave Nashville without visiting the Ryman. Hands down the best live music venue in the USA. If you can't catch a show there, at least go in for the tour. Dripping in history.

Strangely awesome. Smack in the middle of lovely Centennial Park (next to Vanderbilt University), this is a full-scale replica of the Greek Parthenon, complete with the biggest statue of Athena ever. It. Is. So. Weird.

There is so much going on around here, we can't possibly capture it. Check out listings, like here: https://www.theeastnashvillian.com/ If you just walk out the door and walk in pretty much any direction you will find stuff.
