Christchurch is a gateway to the South Island, and a hub for many one-day excursions. You can reach Akaroa, Hamner Springs, Kaikoura, and Arthurs pass, all within two hours of Christchurch. All are wonderful trips for one day or an overnight stay. There are also multiple beaches, ski fields and easy or challenging walks all within easy commuting distance. Staying in the central city means that you have access to it all using public transport if you wish. There is an internal access garage on the premises if you have a vehicle. The cities top performance venues are within walking distance. The Court Theatre and the Train Station are the only two places I can think of that require a cab/Uber or a longer walk.
