Icebergs Dining Room- Icebergs can be everything you love about Sydney, or it can be everything you hate. Those with even a slight case of reverse snobbery might accuse this top-shelf Bondi restaurant of being a little private beach club at times. Admittedly, fellow diners do have a tendency to give off a ‘comfortable on any size yacht’ vibe. But letting that get in the way of what could potentially be an epic lunch would be a mistake. Because when it’s good, it’s very, very good. At the height of its excellence, it gives you the feeling every restaurant should leave you with: utter refreshment.

Bills - Why Granger waited up till now to open in Bondi is a total mystery. The queue’s a mile long, but nobody seems to care – partly because it’s a scene in itself waiting for a table and everyone seems to know each other, and partly because the turnaround is unusually quick. It's even easier if you pop in for dinner and order miso salmon, a high-end schnitzel or something off the barbecue menu.

North Bondi Fish - There are very few venues in Sydney that are truly beachfront, but North Bondi Fish is in as close in proximity to Bondi Beach as the grassy knoll. As you walk in there’s sand on the doorstep – this isn’t decorative, it’s just what happens when you’re 12 metres away from one of the world’s most popular shorelines. Given it’s prime NoBo position, this bright and breezy seafood palace has been the spot for many long lunches since it opened back in 2013.

Ode - For anyone who says you can’t sell carbs in Bondi, this bar presents a full house doing swift demolition work on an excellent cacio e pepe that is rich but stops short of heart-busting territory. It’s probably all that black pepper giving the dish a flinty, sparky spiciness that keeps the cheese in check, but tender oily pieces of sardine also give this cheesy pasta a surprising sophistication.

Bondi may now sport an A Tavola serving spaghetti by the sea, but the original Darlinghurst digs where chef/owner Eugenio Maiale makes his own pasta, is still going strong. The look of the place follows the same cues that made the original A Tavola such a hit. Big copper orbs light the room, marble communal tables double as a workbench for the chefs rolling out fresh pasta. It’s a like a living window display. Despite the new shiny fit-out, A Tavola remains a neighbourhood restaurant.

You’d think that Bondi is more than accounted for in the pizza front – you’ve got Pompei’s or Da Orazio for traditional pizze, Gelbison for a cheerful BYO affair and BBPB for pub-style pies. So when Tipica opened in place of an underused Mexican restaurant on Hall Street, we were curious to see if another pizza palace was necessary. Luckily, it certainly has a place in the beachside suburb, thanks to its awesome woodfired product. The pizza here is Tuscan style and the dough is rested for 48 hours, resulting in a crusty, fragrant bready base – you’ll want to devour the entire pizza right down to the last chewy crust.

If you’re going to build an all-day restaurant on the fêted Campbell Parade you may as well go all in. Wear the extra cost of those beautiful curved timber window frames and gold lettering – it’ll make people feel like they’re entering a luxe hotel. Shell out on brass clipboards that are so hefty they turn your menu into a weapon. Pony up for a big open kitchen complete with glowing wood fire and mosaic mural of life savers.

Pompei's is a great restaurant. That's not to say the service is slick, but it is friendly. Start with some grissini (that's breadsticks to youse) with a plate of prosciutto while you think about pizza. Play it straight with a margarita (tomato, buffalo mozzarella and basil) or try the broccoli topped with mozzarella and ripped up chunks of pork sausage. They also make an excellent pizza biancho (that's pizza sans tomato) with thin slices of potato, sea salt and rosemary. The bases are thin, wood-fired and made on a stone (all very traditional) and if you fancy your dough folded, this is the place to come - the salami and ricotta calzone is a ripper.

When you walk into this Hall Street staple you can instantly smell fragrant Thai basil and hear the sounds of woks clanging. They do seriously big serves (one serve will satisfy two) of grilled meats, super rich curries and wok-fried favourites. You'll also find a whole page of the menu devoted to duck (try the boneless roasted 'Lucky' duck) and lamb (the massaman uses whole lamb shanks) alongside plenty of veggo dishes.

China Diner offers a cross-pollination of Indonesian, Vietnamese, Thai and Chinese dishes. They're doing a menu that’s been designed with big groups in mind, which might explain the caveat at the bottom of the snacks section. And that is ‘a minimum order of two per item’. There are Vietnamese sandwiches (the smoked tofu with pickled carrot, cucumber and coriander is the winner here) and sticky, sweet Malaysian-style Marmite chicken wings. Puffy and addictive rice crackers flecked with seaweed go strangely well with a side of Cantonese-style pickled red cabbage.

A personal favourite and a huge hit with the locals. Sean’s is freshness, simplicity and fun on a plate – it’s the antidote to every bad meal you’ve ever had. Chef and owner Sean Moran cooks his own food his own way. And has done since he opened the restaurant in 1993. The restaurant looks straight out over Bondi Beach – it’s some of the best real estate in the country. The breezy coastal friendliness, the welcoming room and the fiercely produce-driven menu (very often specials will change depending on the week, or even the day) is an all-seasons win. Make sure to book ahead for some of Sean's beautiful farm grown produce right across from the beach.

Order the bacon and egg roll If you just want a simple, hand-held brekky it doesn’t get much better than a bacon and egg roll, and they make a very good one at the Shop, a little café and wine bar on Curlewis Street that’s the size of a walk-in-wardrobe. The kitchen is tiny, but they’ve got their systems sorted so that by the time your coffee is ready they’ve warmed up a soft, fresh brown roll, slapped aioli on both sides, daubed it with tomato relish, crossed it with two bacon rashes and capped it off with a fresh poached egg.

This chic restaurant-cum-bar has commanded the corner of Denham Street and Bondi Road for a couple of years now and shows no sign of losing its charm, friendly atmosphere and service. Order the EFS omelette This ace brekky option is halfway between those famous egg pancakes that Kylie Kwong does down at the Carriageworks Markets and a Vietnamese spring pancake. They mix eggs with a little coconut milk and turmeric to make a golden fluffy omelette that has a gentle tropical spice flavor, and then fold it like a taco around fresh bean shoots, snow peas, red capsicum and mushrooms. A lug of ginger, lime and sesame dressing gives it a zippy kick that makes this one of the most creative breakfasts in Bondi.

Order the 'south side' smashed avo The ‘South Side’ smashed avocado is so-named because it’s seasoned with seaweed scooped off that stretch of Bondi Beach. The dried, crunchy specks of algae bolster the breakfast staple; instead of the snoozy avo-and-lemon cliché that haunts humdrum cafés, the Nine gives its version extra heft and contrast, thanks to a nutty layer of tahini, light fennel shavings, two kinds of sesame, a shower of salty feta crumbles and a #cleaneating cameo by kale. (Hey, it’s Bondi, after all.)

Order the Woodsman This little café up the north end is very popular, but also very good at dealing with the queues outside on weekends. Order the ‘Woodsman’ even if you earned your breakfast by splashing about in the water rather than felling sequoias. There is no room for sides when you’re facing down a dish of two golden squares of polenta cake, pan-fried mixed mushrooms, a swipe of goat’s curd and a soft boiled egg rolled in dukkah. Feeling dusty? Add a Bloody Mary. It’s basically a meal in itself, with cucumber, celery, pickles, tomatoes and lemon as a garnish.

D'orazio Pizza + Porchetta -There’s only one place you need to be right now, and that’s face-first in a focaccia con porchetta. The outrageous sandwich is a hot, fatty, rich and juicy pile of chopped-up roast pork straight from the rotisserie, laid with crisp cos lettuce leaves and grilled eggplant, all smooshed between pieces of pizza bread in a happy delicious mess. And that’s what happens when you put Popolo’s Orazio D’Elia in the kitchen and catch Maurice Terzini at full power.

Bondi might be a suburb known for shunning unnecessary carbs, but a salmon bagel is an essential addition to any breakfast best-of list, and Lox Stock and Barrel is the place to get one when you’re in this neck of the woods. Order the shakshuka The titular dish from this North Bondi café and bakery is also their standout offering. The tomato sauce that the eggs are cooked in is thick and rich, almost like a Napoletana. A scattering of olives reinforces the Italian accent on this Middle Eastern dish, and a side order of halloumi – pan fried and then added to the sauce so that it stays soft and melty – throws a little Greek twist in there for good measure. The thick, toasted, house-baked bread on the side is sturdy enough to ferry every last bit from pan to face – their ratios are spot on.

Entering Gertrude and Alice is like stepping inside a good friend’s house – a friend with an insatiable appetite for books. This cosy bookshop-cum-café is full to the brim with new and secondhand titles; all jumbled together, piled high to the ceiling and stacked along the walls. Bondi’s not known for its thriftiness, but if you’re willing to do a little digging you can find a bargain here. Tuck into a text or put your writer's hat on at one of the communal tables and while away the hours over a cuppa. Literary doggos even have their own Gertrude and Alice hashtag on Insta. Harrys - Forget everything you think you know about cured fish – at this beautifully appointed café in North Bondi they are curing, smoking and dry aging their salmon in house and the result is ribbons of smoky, pink fish that has a proper meatiness about it. They lay the fish like shingles over toast topped with a dill yoghurt, with a fresh tangle of bitter leaves, cherry tomatoes and shaved fennel on the side. A squeeze of lemon juice and freshly ground pepper and that’s a five-star start to your day right there.

When long-time surfer Eugene Tan began emailing photos of the waves and surfers of Bondi Beach to friends some 14 years ago, he had no idea his little project would evolve to anything as big as Aquabumps. Today, 51,000 people subscribe to his daily email newsletter – featuring pictures he’s taken that morning in Bondi (or, if on holidays, in Tahiti, the Maldives, Fiji...) – and thousands pour into the gallery to see the images up on the wall. There’s been a book – 2010’s A Day at Bondi – and there’s another one on the way in October. And there’s a partnership with Havaianas: the new line of Aquabumps thongs come out in August. Why did his little project take off? “It’s been popular because it’s grown organically,” says Tan. “It’s a hand-selected group of likeminded people who all have one thing in common: they love the beach."

The Stuffed Beaver - You get all the best parts of a North American-style bar – beers, hot wings, a bull mastiff guarding the door – without any of the inconvenience of sub-freezing temperatures and carnivorous wildlife.

Hotel Ravesis - There are four ways to drink at Hotel Ravesis – post-swim, downstairs with a cold schooner or cider; late night on a packed dancefloor with a vodka lime and soda or bubbles; on the side balcony with a crisp rosé (which they've got on tap here) that'll match the facade's pink paint job; or on the front balcony, perhaps exploring more of the wine list or diving into the fruit-heavy cocktail menu.

If you’re coming on the weekend, early afternoon is absolutely the call to ensure a good spot. And on a summer’s afternoon, the cool white design of Icebergs frames the deep blue hues of the Pacific Ocean. We love it.

After the Bondi Bowling Club received the fairy godmother treatment from the team behind Panama House and Corner House, suddenly we had big picnic tables shaded by crimson G.H Mumm umbrellas, a shady terrace and a cool low litl clubhouse to hang out in on weekends.

Bondi has cafés for days, but cosy roosts for a little after-hours wine are rarer out east, which is why Can Cava Pintxos and Wine is a welcome addition to Hall Street’s nightlife. This wine bar serves pinxtos – little bar snacks skewered onto bread – but your meal here is not quite the miniature fencing match you’re picturing. While both juicy beef meatballs in an earthy tomato sauce and creamy chickpea chips do come impaled on cocktail spears, a salty tuna tartare with chives and capers balances on a flimsy raft of a single, thin potato chip.

It’s the most photographed ocean pool in Australia – at Sydney’s most famous beach – which makes the 50-metre saltwater pool a popular spot for sunbathers and a bottleneck spot on the Bondi to Coogee walk. The baths have been a landmark of Bondi for 100 years, and if you want to become a member of the oldest winter swimming club in Australia you must swim three Sundays a month for a period of five years. Luckily, for those who just want a slice of the active lifestyle synonymous with the suburb, it’s only $6.50 for casual entry – giving you access to the pool, the sauna and the gym. For the ultimate experience, book into a Yoga by the Sea class ($25, Tue-Sat during summer months).

It’s not the most challenging walk in the Sydney area, but it’s one of the most popular – and for good reason. That coastline is spectacular, from every direction, and you’re in a pretty urban environment, so it’s one you can do on a whim – though it’s best to avoid peak tourist season and the midday sun. No matter what distance you choose, activewear is always welcome. The full stretch takes you by Waverley Cemetery, where it can get windy through the suspended walkway. Find there the secluded nook that is Gordons Bay, a good place to swim and snorkel. And you’ll pass several ocean pools and local swimming spots – especially Bronte Pool, around the concreted Clovelly inlet and Coogee’s rock pools

If you haven’t had pho for breakfast, Bondi Farmers’ Markets is where you should try it Bar Pho has been a staple of the weekly produce and snack fare for the past eight years, and the warming basil, beef and star anise-spiked stock makes a solid argument for passing on the usual bacon and egg breakfast. This stall along with Fritter House (try the lion’s share with chipolatas, sour cream, two big corn fritters, bacon and salsa) and the Raclette Shack (oozy cheese-topped potatoes are always a great idea at 10am) make the markets an excellent brunching destination. Grab some grub, BYO picnic mat and sprawl out on the lawn before making your way to the produce section.
