Sightseeing

Glenarm has long been a port of call for sailors and yachtsmen travelling to and from Scotland's island-studded western coast and has proved a welcoming haven to visitors from all over the world. The marina is a short walk from our apartment and I always enjoy looking at the fancy yachts and dreaming about which one I'd buy if I won the lottery! There's also a great view from the harbour's end and on a clear day you can see all the way to Scotland.

A beautiful forest with a wide variety of trees and plants - the scent of bluebells and wild garlic is incredible. The walk along the river is beautiful with wonderful views of the river and the thick lush undergrowth. You might even be lucky enough to spot a red squirrel! The paths are easy to follow with a few uphills but it's mostly easy terrain. A great way to spend an afternoon in Glenarm.

A five minute drive from Glenarm, this sheltered and compact harbour is the focal point of Carnlough village. There's also a popular beach for paddling and sandcastle building. The harbour is used by pleasure boats and fishing boats and has opportunities for sea angling. Carnlough Harbour is one of the must-see stop offs along the Causeway Coastal route for Game of Thrones fans. You'll recognise the stony staircase leading down to the sea, filmed as part of the Free City of Braavos Canal, where Arya Stark crawled up from the waters after being stabbed by the Waif. Here you'll find bars, restaurants and take-aways and lots of shops selling souvenirs.

Bring food for evening meals.

There aren't any restaurants open at night in Glenarm. There are some a little further away in Carnlough or Larne, but not in walking distance of the apartment. If you aren't driving then make sure to bring food to prepare your own meals. There is a well stocked shop right next door though, so don't worry, even if you arrive empty handed you won't starve!
