Sightseeing

Just a walk away from our place the Rattoo Round Tower is a hidden gem in North Kerry. For beautiful photos go just before sunset. Rattoo Round Tower is one of Ireland’s finest examples of round tower dating from the 10th century. The Tower stands on the grounds of an ancient monastery. It’s thought to have been founded by Bishop Lughach, one of the first Christian evangelists in County Kerry. Additionally, the site boasts the ruins of a 15th-century church. Rattoo is probably the most historic site in the parish of Ballyduff, as well as an old graveyard, the remains of an abbey and a Great House.

A relaxing & feel good experience. Collin's is a famous bath house on The Ladies Strand for almost 100 years. Firstly, the natural goodness of bathing in salt water brings welcome relief to general muscular stiffness, tension, arthritic and rheumatic pain. The hot water stimulates the release of concentrated iodine from the seaweed. This acts as a natural antiseptic, whilst its oils moisturise your skin leaving a tingling freshness. The bath owners hand pick the seaweed daily from the " Blackrocks ". The water provided for your bath is sea water, pumped straight from the Atlantic Ocean each day. This is heated and ready for you at the turn of a tap.

Blennerville Windmill Visitor Centre is located on the shores of Tralee Bay and is a dominant landmark where the town of Tralee meets the Dingle Peninsula. It is also linked from Tralee town by a canal walk which extends to Tralee Bay, offering beautiful views of the Sliabh Mish Mountains and the bay itself. Suitable for all ages, Blennerville Windmill is the largest working windmill in Ireland and the only windmill along Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way. It was authentically restored to full working order in the 1980s. Visitors can get up close and appreciate the scale and complexity of the windmill machinery and climb to the top to see how flour is made. Blennerville was the main post of emigration from County Kerry during The Great Famine (1845 - 1848) and was, during those years, the home port of the famous emigrant barque “Jeanie Johnson”.

A definite must do. It is like nowhere else. The caves, cliffs, birds nesting, sounds and smell of the sea are food for the soul. Bring a camera, you will want to take picture after picture. Sunsets are incredible. Words can not describe how beautiful it is here. So romantic. Popular spot to get engaged.
A murmuration of starlings is a remarkable sight – Thousands of birds swooping and whirling in unison in the sky above Ballybunion. Early evening just before dusk, when the birds begin to roost, they gather on rooftops and telephone wires in Doon Road, chattering and gossiping before they take off, racing and dancing at sunset. The Nine Daughters Hole, blowhole, on the cliff walk is their favourite playground, where they dip and dive, disappearing through this natural blowhole, before appearing again as if by magic from one of the caves below the cliff walk. Spotting a starling murmuration and their startling displays of coordination would be an amazing addition to your time in Ballybunion. It happens from September to March.

Ballybunion: Bromore is, quite simply, spectacular. The sheer 180 foot cliffs have been sculpted by nature over thousands of years. Winter storms and the wild Atlantic waves have formed headlands, bays and carved deep caves at sea level, some of which later progressed to become arches and sea stacks. Minerals seeping through the layers of flagstone that form Bromore Cliffs give them their unusual, ever-changing colours. The crevices and narrow ledges are welcome homes to a diversity of wildlife. Falcons, ravens, fulmars, guillemots, cormorants and rock doves are just some of the bird-life inhabiting this area. The Atlantic waters below are inhabited by Atlantic Grey Seals, Bottlenose Dolphins and an occasional Sea Otter. The walk along the cliff top is safe, easy, well fenced and suitable for all ages (of course children must be supervised). The natural vegetation on the cliff top is wind and salt tolerant. Grasses, sea pinks, kidney vetches, sheepsbit, sea asters and some orchids are all in full bloom in early summer. This ungrazed cliff top is habitat to a myriad of insects, butterflies and wild honey bees. The deep dry springy carpet is a haven for small mammals such as the field mouse and the pygmy shrew. In the fields and ditches near the cliffs you'll hear the songs of stonechats, pipits, larks and linnets.

The Kerry Head Cycleway which is a mix of flat and hilly countryside starts in Ballyheigue and departs along the steep hill overlooking Ballyheigue Bay, with its crashing waves where many a ship has foundered. As cyclists climb to the top, the westerly prevailing Atlantic wind can be a challenge but soon the road levels out for a gentler but undulating ride back to Ballyheigue.

In Fenit you can get close to nature, beautiful walking around the bay by Fenit Island and on the Blue Flag beach, swimming in the crystal clear water, fishing at the Viaduct , looking out to sea and gazing at the beautiful Slieve Mish Mountains across Tralee Bay. The heritage trail, Slí Bhreanainn, (The Brendan Way) extends from Fenit to Lerrig Cross in Ardfert. Every year several sea faring festivals are held. Fenit Harbour has a full service and modern 130 berth marina for boats up to 45 feet. The Tralee Bay Sailing Club overlooks the harbour and enjoys sailing, kayaking and power boating and runs summer camps in sailing for kids. There are deep sea fishing and yacht charters available at the Tralee Bay Angling Club with shore fishing guides, cruises and lighthouse trips in the harbour. On the Sporting front, Fenit has to offer the local Soccer club Fenit Samphires, who play in the upper levels of the Kerry District League and boast very good under age teams. The GAA football team is Churchill and play at the Sportsfield in Spa between Tralee and Fenit. They play football at all levels. For the kids there is a good sized playground close to the beach and was at one time the Fenit Railway Station. The footbridge still remains for crossing the rail track.

Glenageenty is an area of mystery, myth and folklore, a wild and rugged landscape that was once the sanctuary to some famous heroes and bandits alike. This loop is the shorter of two loops and it takes you along its riverbanks and woodlands to listen to singing birds, gurgling streams, and the underfoot crunch of fallen hazelnuts and oak leaves - a paradise of peace and tranquillity. For those with an interest in birdlife, ravens, hen harriers, kestrels, pheasants and cranes are all regular sightings - for nightimers it's a haven for bat life!

This narrow, twisting road runs for 12kms between the town of Dingle on the south and Kilmore Cross on the north of the peninsula, where roads fork to Cloghane/Brandon or Castlegregory. The views from the road are breath-taking, with a glaciated landscape of mountains, corrie lakes and a broad sweeping valley spread out below. At the steepest part, the road weaves its way around, sharp cliff faces and passes high corrie lakes. There are some very narrow sections where there would only be room for one car so allow cars to come up before you descend. There are lots of opportunities to stop or give way to other traffic at wider sections along the road. Larger vehicles or any vehicle over two tonnes in weight are prohibited from using the Conor Pass to avoid difficulties in passing other vehicles. There are two main viewing stops, one at Peddlar’s Lake on the north side and the other at the top. From the scenic car park at the summit there are fantastic views north and south of the Dingle Peninsula along the Wild Atlantic Way and one a good day you might see as far as the Cliffs in Co. Clare or the Aran Islands, off Co. Galway Pedlar’s Lake – Lough Doon Corrie Lake Lough Doon (locally known as Pedlar’s Lake) is a glacial corrie lake that sits above the road on the north side of the Conor Pass. Beneath the lake is the Conor Pass waterfall with a small car park and viewing area. The lake is accessed by climbing up a small rock path above the car park. From this vantage point you can view the glaciated mountain scenery of the Dingle Peninsula.

John B Keane's is not just a pub , it's a play in itself. Here at the counter, after closing time,John B Keane wrote his many masterpieces. John B's is arguably Irelands most famous pub and the literary tradition continues. John B's son Billy is a renowned writer and broadcaster. Billy runs the pub now and so the story has another chapter. Fun prevails here. There's plenty of talk and no pretension. Pub theatre takes place in the summer and Mickey Mc Connell , the singer song writer performs in the pub every Sunday night. Mickey is the composer of Only our Rivers Run Free and a host of hits. You'd never know who would drop in. It could be a Nobel prize winner or a small farmer thirsty after tough days work in the meadow. Talk and wit are standard in this haven of civilization. 'John B's is and always will be our living room ,with beer ',says Billy. This little pub with the the posters of John B's hit plays on the wall is an unfolding drama. Call in and play your part.
