Mid-Cornwall mining - stories & beautiful walks
I'd like to welcome you to my home at the Meadow Barns, where I have created a centre for local history and climate hope, in a wild-flower meadow. The location high on a hill looking down to the sea on one side and a hidden wooded valley on the other, gives us access for wonderful walks in the World Heritage site for mining. As a writer and teacher this special location has given me materials for 6 Episodes of history stories, which I love to share. I will introduce the walk routes and history topics at our big outdoor map. Then we will take a tour around the meadow site, engaging with the main characters who transformed this landscape 200 years ago. You can just watch and ask questions, or choose to be a bit more of a participant by donning a hat, or mask and reading some sections of stories or poems. I will always be guided by what you feel comfortable to do. At the end of that first tour we will go into the library building for refreshments and a short film. This is another way to illustrate the history, in photos and maps. When everyone is suitably dressed, fed and watered, we will head off on the walk usually taking at least 2 hours to explore with 10 stories on the way. But again, this can be varied to suit the age, fitness and interests of a private group. On a longer walk we can take a picnic or wait until the return for a last snack, gazing at the view .
An Introduction to Wild River Swimming
My introductory dips are the perfect option if you are new to cold water swimming, or you want to build up your confidence in and around rivers. After meeting, we will take a short ten minute walk across relatively gentle terrain, to one of the most beautiful river spots on The Dart. I will help you to learn how to safely enter cold water, and to identify any risks. This is a brilliant way to relax and enjoy the benefits of cold water dipping, whilst in a safe and supportive environment. Wetsuits are optional - some prefer to go with and others without! If you have any questions or are ready to book your introductory dip, please do get in touch.
Forest Garden tour
This is an opportunity to get up close and personal with a young but diverse food forest. The first trees were planted in 2013 so it's far from mature but it's already easy to see many of the symbiotic relationships in action. There are over three hundred edible perennial varieties already growing including forty varieties of fruit & nut trees, dozens of unusual shrubs, berry bushes and medicinal plants, plus seventy kinds of perennial vegetable. Learn about self-sustaining ecosystems, companion planting and perennial vegetables whilst asking as many questions as you like and tasting some produce along the way. There'll be a chance to learn more about sustainable bee-keeping with a look at an observation hive for those who wish to. The tour will be tailored to suit you, depending upon your or your group's existing knowledge or interests. And we can talk about how to apply some forest garden principles to your own plot, if you have one. Other things to note: I usually only add availability for about two months in advance. So if you're looking to book further ahead than that then either send me a message to request a date or keep an eye on the calendar, as more dates will appear every month. I'm open to hosting experiences throughout the winter months, if requested, but the garden is at its best from April to October.
