Multnomah Zen, a four waterfall scenic hiking experience
Multnomah Falls and other waterfalls and vistas of the Columbia Gorge are astonishing icons of geology, the sort that have inspired mythology and lore of warriors, gods and passions. We will drive out in our vans to meet the tallest waterfall in the state, and then drive to a few of the shorter but even more stunning ones, too; falls which could only be the daughters and sons of legend.
In this half-day experience, we will explore wonders with some short hikes (totaling less than 2.5 miles/4 km) and visits to overlooks and vistas that will have you gasping in awe. While Multnomah Falls and its iconic Benson Bridge are together the most-visited tourist attraction in the Portland area, they are only a part of our experience.
We will meet at our shop in inner SE Portland, where we'll ride in our comfortable Sprinter and Transit vans to the nearby gorge. Depending on weather conditions, we will visit a few small hidden waterfalls and spectacular plunge-style falls whose columnar basalt has us learning words for "amazing" in other languages.
We'll also tell you stories, geology, botany and oft-repeated tales of pioneers and road-builders, but also the old stories we've learned, of gods and wild spirits and about the oldest North American civilization, forever altered by “manifest destiny."
Please note we book directly as well as through AirBNB, and your group may be up to 10.

Are you curious about communities that prioritize PEOPLE, CREATIVITY, and CRAFT BEERS?
Are you ready to embark on an ALL YOU CAN PORTLAND BUFFET through a walking tour featuring LOCAL HOTSPOTS and COOL STORIES?
Then I’ve got the adventure for you: THIS TOUR.
This walking tour explores where the locals go for Portland's nightlife!
I show you the soul of the city by immersing you in its neighborhood culture. This means checking out a neighborhood district, drinking taps from neighborhood breweries, and getting the neighborhood perspective by interacting with someone who lives here!
By the end of the walking tour, we’ll have made a mildly-inebriated adventure from seeing why the people of Portland are the attraction of the city.

3. People who enjoy open-minded discussions and appreciate collecting new perspectives.

Gorge waterfall hike and bike adventure
Our experience provides the best of its category -- best bicycles, guides, vehicles! We transport our guests and bikes in comfortable vans, and our guides ride with very small groups. We'll visit waterfalls you will not see on other tours. You'll immerse yourself in the temperate rainforest!
We tell the stories that need to re-awaken. Beyond the 180 years of pioneers and loggers, before the century-old highway, this was the land of people with a rich mythology. We remember the long history this place holds, and tell these stories as best we can.
After we fit you for bikes at our shop in SE Portland, we'll drive out toward adventure. The bike ride and hike both take place in the Columbia River Gorge, the waterfall-laden western end of an 80-mile (130-km) canyon. At a breathtaking vista overlooking the Gorge, we'll take photos, and hear the story of who was here before us.
Over the course of the tour, we'll ride 4-6 miles (7-10 km), gentle downhill and some uphill (depending on your group) on a historic highway frequented by cyclists, see four waterfalls including Multnomah Falls, hike about 1.0-2 miles (2-4km) -- all within a 30-40 min drive of the city. The tour is 4-5 hours; you'll remember it for years to come!
Please note we book directly as well as through AirBNB, and your overall tour group may be up to 10.
Bike Around Portland to Culture and Art
Beautiful bikes, beautiful rides, and all our neighborhood secrets. On our tours we'll smell roses (in season), taste treats, ride across bridges, and along rivers; it's the best way to experience the diversity of culture, art, poetry, nature, parks and neighborhoods in Portland.
Our approach is to spend more time riding, but lots of time stopping at gardens, art installations, sculptures and poetry beaches. We start in the inner Eastside at our shop at 833 SE Main St #124, where we will fit you for a bike and helmet, ready for an 8-10 mile ride.
We head out into Ladd’s Addition, to our fave rose garden, into an art-heavy industrial district, across the sexy Tilikum Bridge, and onto Portland's waterfront. We’ll ride along the water before we head over another bridge back to our shop!
Portland is not just a city of seamless bicycle infrastructure and friendly relations between cyclists and motorists, but also a city of poets. Literally, figuratively, our bike ride is a poem; a series of poems; to our city. We'll read poetry written on murals, in sidewalks, and carved in rocks. There is, too, the whirling poetry of wheels on pavement, the sweet suspension of effort that is cycling on the streets and pathways in this place we love.
Portland mornings are cool -- bring layers! It rains often in Portland; rain jackets are wise. Minimal bike experience is ok; none, is not.

POP QUIZ:
Are you here to absorb authentic Portland culture?
BONUS CREDIT:
Are you trying to live like a local while you are?
Because Portland is a MILLENNIAL PLAYGROUND best understood when explored like someone from here.
How do we do that?
Here are the locals' favorite pastimes: picking up cannabis from the neighborhood dispensary, grabbing drinks at a cozy cafe, eating plant-based food done right, and sipping crafts at an eclectic bar!
So for starters, we'll sniff around a CANNABIS DISPENSARY to kick things off on a high note.
Second, we'll sip tea inside a LIVING ROOM CAFE that's been converted from a Pixar-esque residence.
Third, we'll grab meals from a VEGAN EATERY featuring meat and cheese alternatives that are as tasty as they are innovative.
And lastly, we'll drink beers at a SEVEN STORY BAR that used to be a hidden back room of a live theater.
To explore the city like a true Portlander, I’ll be your guide to show you where you’d go and how you’d do it. Along the way, I'll enlighten you to the community's culture and provide custom recommendations on how to live like the locals!

Discover Portland By Bike Tour
The essential introduction to Portland. We’ll hop on well-traveled bike lanes stopping to admire the views of downtown, the river and the city’s many bridges. Then we ride along the waterfront past the brick and cast iron fronted buildings of Old Town built in the 19th and early 20th century.
Next our tour will head into Chinatown where the streets once teemed with immigrants from all over the world. From there we’ll roll through the Pearl District where turn-of-the-century warehouses have been turned into art galleries, shops, restaurants and condos.
We’ll pass Henry Weinhard’s 140 year old brewery before heading downtown. The tour cruises past a number of our favorite food carts before entering the South Park Blocks – separated from the North blocks by a century of legal battles. We’ll pedal through Oregon’s largest university then turn downhill to the waterfront and the Willamette River, lifeblood of the city and state.
Time permitting, we'll ride into some east side neighborhoods with food carts, gorgeous houses, rose gardens and vibrant shopping districts before crossing the river again.
Ebike upgrade, only $20! PLease note in your booking and we'll get you set up.
*In order to offer livable wages to our guides, if only 1 person books, a supplement of $20 will be charged upon arrival.

Grilling with Chef Steve
With me, Chef Steven, you'll be cooking and eating some of the very best grilled food of your life! You'll begin by learning about preparation methods for various proteins (brining, dry rub, marinating) to ensure juicy, flavorful results. Then you'll learn how to pair sauces with your proteins to further enhance their flavor. And to close out the evening, we'll make the entire meal on the grill for you to enjoy!
I focus the class on the science and the "why" behind grilling techniques. You'll learn my "Golden Seven" rules for perfectly grilled proteins, and tips for searing and smoking like a pro!
While the weather in Portland can be unpredictable, our grilling patio is completely covered and we have outdoor heaters if the grill isn't keeping us warm enough! We will hold the class regardless of weather.
(Alternate class times, private parties or parties of greater than 10 can be accommodated by contacting the Chef directly.)
I can also come to you! If you've booked an AirBNB in the Portland area (up to 60 miles away) that has a grill, I can come teach the class at your location! I also do private chef parties, catering and events. Just message me for details.
Unfortunately, I cannot host a class for one person, but solo guests can feel free to join classes with other guests.
Learn to Bake Homemade Bread!
We'll start out at my house for espresso & homemade whole-grain toast that uses locally-grown and milled flour. Next we'll get to mixing and baking your own loaves. You will leave with a vigorous sourdough starter, plus a loaf of whole-grain, naturally-leavened bread. Not only that, but you'll have the knowledge to go home and start making your own bread regularly! While we wait for your bread to rise, we'll visit some of Portland's best bakeries. This is a lesson and tour in one. Check out @1000bitesofbread on Instagram.
Other things to note
Arrange transportation to and from my house, but I will provide complimentary transportation to the bakeries we will visit. We'll have breakfast together and there will be plenty of snacks.
Immersive Chinese tea experience in a private tea house
Immersive tea tasting in our little tea house, featuring different tabletop flower arrangements and aromatherapy every week!.
There will be Chinese style tea art demonstrations and on certain holidays Guzheng ( Chinese musical instrument) performances.
Guests will choose between black tea, oolong tea, yellow tea, green tea, dark tea and scented teas from China at different tea tasting times.
I have been in touch with tea since I was 10 years of age and it has always been a part of my life.
I am a landscape architect and an enthusiastic tea artist.
After I moved to America, my partner and husband Joseph singlehandedly built the tea house for me, according to my design. Everything including the slab table was made by Joseph over a period of two years.
Now I would like to share with others this
tea house full of love energy and my love of Chinese tea, the etiquette of drinking tea and interesting stories of China.
NOTE FROM HUSBAND JOE:
I personally built this tea house for my Chinese wife, just for her to share tea culture with others.
Wild Edibles Hike in the Forest
Learn about 20 wild edibles like thimbleberry, dock greens and Indian lettuce for foraging! We'll nibble our way along a trail, as we discover berry plants, edible greens, and even some trees with edible parts. I'll have a handout so you don't have to take notes.
The hike is about 1.5 miles, in a very lightly used wild area, and takes 2 to 3 hours. You can gather enough to cook a dish on this learning experience. No pets please, thanks!
PS I am fully vaccinated and boosted. Thanks.

Local secrets--Donuts and coffee by bike
Start with bike fitting in the inner east side, where the best doughnuts are! At our shop at 833 SE Main Street #121, we are also in the literal center of Portland’s craft coffee roasting icons (three of the city’s best roasters surround our block).
We'll begin with coffee, tea or hot cocoa at a shop that roasts its own beans, and sample some amazing single-origin coffee so we'll be ready for lots of sweets to come. While the itinerary will vary based on doughnut shop hours, we'll typically introduce you first to a hidden gem of a doughnut shop — the one locals prefer — then head to the another favorite doughnut shop (famous for their apple fritters!)
Portland’s doughnut scene isn’t just about eating pastries; it’s also about the culture that makes it possible. Did you know the doughnut-loving Homer Simpson was based off a Portlander? Which came first, the Homer doughnut or the city’s doughnut boom? We’ll include fun gems of Simpsons lore, tales of lumber barons who helped early fried dough makers thrive, and check out some sugar-fueled street art.
We'll head last to a shop you’ve surely heard of, one where the doughnuts are weird and the wedding “cakes” include pentagrams and other magical symbols. The ride in total is 6-8 miles (10-13 km), with some gentle hills. Bikes, helmets, and the local favorite doughnut included.
