The Antinioti lagoon - The ecosystem Antinioti lagoon The Antinioti lagoon is protected by the Natura 2000 treaty due to its uniqueness but also because it offers shelter to many species of birds. Scientists working in the area and monitoring the ecosystem have recorded more than 90 species of migratory birds, herons, cormorants, ducks, sea turtles, river turtles and lizards - a species of reptile. The rarest species found in the area is the otter or swirl as the people of Corfu call it and that lives in large populations in the lagoon.
