Urban food tour with Panama blogger
Get ready for an immersive tasting menu as you get to experience the real Panama - from the gritty to the most Insta-gramable, and everything in between.
Our day starts in the historic Casco Viejo neighborhood at a trendy rooftop where everyone in the group will get to know each other. I’ll give you the quickest history lesson on Panama City and how it’s changed throughout its development before we start our adventure.
We will then walk a few blocks to one of the most luxurious hotels in the neighborhood to try a street food delicacy gone gourmet.
Next, we’ll head to Santa Ana, the most vibrant part of the city where locals still live. We will visit my friend’s chocolate shop where you’ll get to try some unique treats, take photos in front of colorful street art, and walk down Panama City's only pedestrian avenue to buy fresh ingredients for our mojito-making workshop later on.
We'll also pass through one of the most affordable artisan markets.
From here, we are going to ride the underground metro to the city center to explore the laid-back Via Argentina neighborhood. While here, we’ll be eating at an old-school restaurant to try classic Panamanian food with a twist.
For our last stop, we are GOING UP to a rooftop bar for a mojito-making workshop where you’ll get to make your own cocktail while watching the sun go down over the city and try fresh ceviche.

Produciendo Café en el Bosque Nuboso de Monteverde
This is not a commercial coffee tour, it is an educational experience to create awareness in the only organic specialty coffee plantation in the Monteverde area, located in the Ecological Sanctuary, a 48 hectares family project focused on conservation, sustainability, agroecology, education and culture.
In a guided workshop by an expert where you will learn from the basics of ancestral agriculture, how we create our own organic fertilizers, then you will know the coffee gardens planted in the forest that surrounds the Ecological Sanctuary, the drying area, and the process that involves the specialty coffee (history, plantations, growth, development, varieties and the science of flavor to prepare a good coffee).
After leaving the forest, we will enjoy a guided coffee tasting, sharpening the senses to recognize defects, attributes, aromas and flavors in different qualities of coffee.
Finally, we will create an interactive demonstration of the science of flavor and all the variables that an alchemist applies in the preparation of a coffee using different infusion methods.
This workshop is an experience that will expand your knowledge of the world of coffee and help you become a home barista and an informed consumer.
We also invite you to explore more of our property by hiking our trails, and connecting with nature.
Go birdwatching with a licensed guide
We'll start birdwatching at 6:00 AM, where we'll see about 30 different species of birds at an elevation of about 4,500 feet above sea level. Then we'll stop at a cafeteria, where we will have a chance to check some bird feeders as we enjoy a great cup of Costa Rican coffee. After that, we'll move up to Curicancha Reserve where we'll walk through two different life zones including different types of forests (secondary, transitional and primary) plus open areas where we'll be able to see much more variety of birds or Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve to be at a different elevation—about 5,000 feet above sea level—where we'll see much more interesting birds, including the resplendent quetzal, guans, barbets, three-wattled bellbirds, tinamous, and so many others.
Typically we would see 60 to 70 different types of birds.
Other things to note
Bring binoculars, a bird book, hiking shoes, insect repellent, rain gear, and a hat.
Cooking Costa Rica Homemade Food
Welcome to my home!
First I will explain you how the Costa Rican diet has impacted the longevity and health of locals.
Then you will learn why I chose the specific ingredients for the 6 traditional dishes that we will cook:
- Empanadas
- Arroz con Pollo (perfumed rice with chicken)
- Gallo Pinto (traditional rice and beans)
- Tortillas con Queso (handmade tortillas with local cheese)
- Picadillo de Papa (potatoes in chunks with ground beef)
- Fried Yuca
I will demonstrate, oversee and guide the class so that you are the one who is cooking. My goal is that you can replicate the recipes when you return back home.
One of the highlights that guests love the most is that you will keep plenty of yummy leftovers, so your experience remains for the following day. I recommend you booking days before departing CR.
These recipes have been transmitted generation after generation. I learned them from my mother and they will be handed to you. I will explain to you on what occasions we normally cook them, what are the secrets for the best taste and stories behind these dishes.
Making tortillas and empanadas are perfect activities for children, they love playing with corn dough, I do that with my little grandson Samuel when he visits me. Meanwhile, teens and adults learn more elaborated recipes.
Please let me know if you have dietary restrictions. Local food has many alternatives.
Cooking with a Costa Rican Family
After booking our experiences, you will arrive at our kitchen where you will be very welcome and where you will share a good time with an authentic Costa Rican family.
After introducing ourselves and getting to know each other over a refreshing drink, we will take you on a tour of our organic garden, where you will learn about the different crops and aromatic plants, followed by picking some of the ingredients that we will use for the preparation of our dish.
When we return to the kitchen we will prepare a refreshing mojito to proceed to prepare a typical dish with fresh ingredients, produced by us and our neighbors.
At the end of the preparation of the dish, we will consume everything prepared in a family atmosphere.
If you come with more time than agreed there is a good chance to observe some animals such as frogs, birds and sloth that live in our garden.

Night walk among the natural jewels of Monteverde
Join me in exploring the cloud forest from a different perspective, a night walk is a unique and unforgettable experience. Costa Rica is a small country in Central America that is home to around 5% of the world's biodiversity. Most animals in Costa Rica are nocturnal. If you like mammals such as sloths, armadillos, active birds such as owls, amphibians, reptiles, and many insects, then this is the opportunity to carry out an outdoor activity and learn more about the nocturnal behavior of many species of flora and fauna. It is an easily accessible route of around 2 kilometers, the ‘jewels’ of the cloud forest shine brighter at night. With luck, we will even be able to observe the famous bioluminescent mushrooms. the place where I do the night walk is very close to the center of Monteverde Santa Elena, it takes only 5 minutes by car. Let's wait for you to observe how the cloud forest comes to life at night.
Adventure hike to La Leona waterfall
We will meet in Curubandé village, around 30 minutes away from Liberia airport, our office is right next to the supermarket Rincon de La Vieja to take you on a FREE 4wd rideto the hike starting checkpoint.

Get light clothes, closed toe shoes, grab a water bottle and get ready to get wet.

This is a basic to moderate difficulty hike, with some rocky steps and paths so we suggest to have a minimum of physical condition for hikes!
Not recommended for bad knees or back aches.
We will start hiking for about 1 hour through the forest, at the river canyon. We¨ll cross the river in shallow parts a few times before to enter to LA LEONA waterfall canyon, and we will spend there some minutes taking pictures and swimming into the refreshing blue waters of the cascade wich comes from the Rincón de la Vieja volcano. On the way back we’ll stop by blue river pools to jump and swim into it and visit a second smaller cascade hidden into a small rocky canyon to take amazing photos to finally walk back to the starting check point to take the shuttle back to the office.

Urban jungle hike, empanadas and coffee
Our day will start in Via Argentina, a hip neighborhood in the city center. We will start at an independent coffee shop to have empanadas and Panamanian coffee (or another beverage if you don't drink coffee) so that we are energized for the day.
From here we will walk to the metro station and take it to the closest point to where we will begin our urban jungle hike.
We will walk down Avenida Central, a lively pedestrian street where you’ll get to see the real Panama. During our walk the chaos of Panama City will slowly end and transition into tropical jungle scenery.
We will be ascending up to the highest natural point in Panama City, enjoying stunning city views while sometimes spotting sloths, monkeys, toucans, and other wildlife until we reach the top. During our journey, you will also learn why this was an area that Panamanians were once not allowed to enter and how they were finally able to step foot back into their own land.
From the top, you’ll see a 360-degree view of the skyscrapers, ocean, and Panama Canal.
The walk from the metro station to the top of the hill and back down is approximately 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) so we’ll be getting our steps in for the day!
