Produciendo Café en el Bosque Nuboso de Monteverde
When our visitors arrive at the Sanctuary, the first thing we will do is make a small introduction about our family project, we are guardians of 48 hectares of forest since 1999.
During the walk to the plantation, we will talk about the history of coffee in the world and Costa Rica, and then explain on the plantation what permaculture consists of and sustainable farming versus monocultures.
Also, learning about specialty coffee and the different ways of processing and finish with a visit to the drying area.
On the way back you will have a coffee tasting in three different roasts and methods and each participant will learn how to prepare their own coffee in the proper way.
In the end you will learn: how to be a more informed and smart buyer, make the most of the product and value the work behind each cup of coffee.
Other things to note
We are the only specialty organic coffee plantation in Monteverde.
During the year coffee goes through different stages, therefore, depending on the season you will see different processes.
Coffee'N Jungle Night Tour
The Coffee'N Jungle tour is a blend of Costa Rican coffee culture and nature that includes the following 3 or 4 activities, depending on if is the day or the night tour:
1) COFFEE TOUR
Throughout the interesting coffee process, that ranges from baby plant care to the roasting, we reveal simple but important "secrets" that will enable the visitor to choose a good coffee when they return home.
Of course, we do not put aside the taste of our great coffee. At this point, we will show our visitors the simplest and easiest way to prepare a delicious cup of coffee.
2) MINI CHOCOLATE TOUR
Cocoa has been one of the greatest legacies of our indigenous ancestors, it is the basic component of chocolate which is appreciated throughout the world today because of exquisite taste and important properties.
On this tour, we show you the most interesting aspects of the chocolate in a delightful way.
3)MINI SUGAR CANE TOUR
A very fun part of our tour because, apart from a brief explanation about this crop, the visitor receives the opportunity to extract the tasty juice in an artisanal way to prepare and taste our delicious cocktail called Jungle Juice.
4) NIGHT TOUR. Adventure and fun in the forest at night. The goal at this stage of the tour is the observation of the nocturnal wildlife (such as frogs, mammals and insects) which normally can not be seen during the day.

Go birdwatching with a licensed guide
We'll start birdwatching at 6:00 AM, where we'll see about 30 different species of birds at an elevation of about 4,500 feet above sea level. Then we'll stop at a cafeteria, where we will have a chance to check some bird feeders as we enjoy a great cup of Costa Rican coffee. Typically we would see 60 to 70 different types of birds.
Other things to note
Bring binoculars, a bird book, hiking shoes, insect repellent, rain gear, and a hat.
Cooking Costa Rica Homemade Food
Welcome to my home!
First I will explain you how the Costa Rican diet has impacted the longevity and health of locals.
Then you will learn why I chose the specific ingredients for the 6 traditional dishes that we will cook:
- Empanadas
- Arroz con Pollo (perfumed rice with chicken)
- Gallo Pinto (traditional rice and beans)
- Tortillas con Queso (handmade tortillas with local cheese)
- Picadillo de Papa (potatoes in chunks with ground beef)
- Fried Yuca
I will demonstrate, oversee and guide the class so that you are the one who is cooking. My goal is that you can replicate the recipes when you return back home.
One of the highlights that guests love the most is that you will keep plenty of yummy leftovers, so your experience remains for the following day. I recommend you booking days before departing CR.
These recipes have been transmitted generation after generation. I learned them from my mother and they will be handed to you. I will explain to you on what occasions we normally cook them, what are the secrets for the best taste and stories behind these dishes.
Making tortillas and empanadas are perfect activities for children, they love playing with corn dough, I do that with my little grandson Samuel when he visits me. Meanwhile, teens and adults learn more elaborated recipes.
Please let me know if you have dietary restrictions. Local food has many alternatives.
Cooking with a Costa Rican Family
After booking our experiences, you will arrive at our kitchen where you will be very welcome and where you will share a good time with an authentic Costa Rican family.
After introducing ourselves and getting to know each other over a refreshing drink, we will take you on a tour of our organic garden, where you will learn about the different crops and aromatic plants, followed by picking some of the ingredients that we will use for the preparation of our dish.
When we return to the kitchen we will prepare a refreshing mojito to proceed to prepare a typical dish with fresh ingredients, produced by us and our neighbors.
At the end of the preparation of the dish, we will consume everything prepared in a family atmosphere.
If you come with more time than agreed there is a good chance to observe some animals such as frogs, birds and sloth that live in our garden.
Finca El Paraiso Farm & Cheese Tour
This is a third generation, small scale, sustainable farm.
The animals are pasture-fed and roam freely throughout the day.
It is our vision to continue to operate this farm without the use of pesticides or chemical based fertilizers and to maintain a balance of pasturelands and forest.
Come and see the cows up close and try your hand at milking.
Take a tour of the garden, where you will find banana trees and seasonal fruits and veggies under the care of our family.
We also have baby cows, goats, pigs, chickens that are part of the farm operation. MonteVerde is an area with a rich history in dairy production.
We invite to try fresh Costa Rican cheese.
You can enjoy an authentic meal featuring the freshly made cheese, hand made tortillas, along with other locally sourced and seasonably available items. You will notice a difference in the quality of the food that is locally sourced and where animals are fed a natural diet.
This is an opportunity to experience "La Pura Vida" at its finest.
Find us in Waze or Maps as "Finca El Paraiso"

Night walk among the natural jewels of Monteverde
Join me in exploring the cloud forest from a different perspective, a night walk is a unique and unforgettable experience. Costa Rica is a small country in Central America that is home to around 5% of the world's biodiversity. Most animals in Costa Rica are nocturnal. If you like mammals such as sloths, armadillos, active birds such as owls, amphibians, reptiles, and many insects, then this is the opportunity to carry out an outdoor activity and learn more about the nocturnal behavior of many species of flora and fauna. It is an easily accessible route of around 2 kilometers, the ‘jewels’ of the cloud forest shine brighter at night. With luck, we will even be able to observe the famous bioluminescent mushrooms. the place where I do the night walk is very close to the center of Monteverde Santa Elena, it takes only 5 minutes by car. Let's wait for you to observe how the cloud forest comes to life at night.
