Anchored by mountains on either end, the mile-long beach is a thing to behold. It is nearly deserted most of the time, making it feel very private. Most of the activity on the beach is at the calmer southern end, where it is family friendly to swim, surf, boogie board, or just splash about. The southern end of the beach also has the highest concentration of beach bars and restaurants on the beach.

An amazing trek through the jungle reveals a gentle river, cascading pools, and more than 200 petroglyphs that date back more than 2000 years. It's a great place to have a picnic and enjoy the serenity of this scenic and holy place. Do not disturb the shrines erected by the Huichol people.

Lo de Marcos - the people

The citizens of Lo de Marcos are very friendly and welcoming to outsiders. It is customary to greet a passerby with Buenos dias, Buenos tardes, or Buenos noches depending on time of day. Most residents do not speak english outside of tourist locations, so some basic spanish is required for many transactions. As a highly catholic town, saturday nights and sundays generally see the most social activity. Lo de Marcos is a very family oriented town, so children playing is a common sight and sound. It is extremely rare to experience panhandling or aggressive vendors in lo de marcos.

Other towns along the Riviera Nayarit can be reached by cab, collectivo, or bus. All three are available at the town square. Recommended: Guayabitos (20 min north) on Wednesday market day. La Peñita (30 min north) on thursday market day. San Pancho (20 min south) for music and great beach scene. Sayulita (30 min south) for a bustling hippy vibe, surfing, and nightlife.
