The mosque Banya Bashi is situated in the center of Sofia, on Maria Luisa boulevard. The mosque was built in accordance with the trends in architecture in the 16th century. It was made of stone and bricks. Nowadays, a public worship with about 500, and during Bayram – with nearly 1,000 believers, is carried out every Friday in the mosque.
Its construction was completed in 1566, during the years the Ottomans had control of the city. The mosque derives its name from the phrase Banya Bashi, which means many baths. The mosque was actually built over natural thermal spas.
Sofia’s only working mosque was built in 1576 and is located at the very heart of the city. This delightful mosque is a typical monument of Ottoman architecture and its interior is quite spectacular. It’s certainly an eye-catching edifice, and the red-brick minaret makes a convenient landmark. Visitors are welcome outside prayer times if modestly dressed.
