In the convict era, the small piece of land (just over 100m wide) that connects Tasman Peninsula to the rest of Tasmania was the site of a military outpost, and a line of ferocious dogs chained across the isthmus, intended to prevent the prisoners from escaping Port Arthur. The old officers' quarter is reportedly the oldest surviving wooden building in Australia and contains a uniquely quaint do-it-yourself kind of museum. With limited time, a walk past the dog sculpture may be enough to appreciate just how strategic and important this site was.
