The Real Felipe Fortress was built to defend the main Peruvian port and the city of Lima from pirates and corsairs during colonial times. The fortress was pivotal in the 1866 naval battle.
The fortress Real Felipe, built over 250 years ago to defend the Peruvian coast and the harbour of Callao, is the biggest and most impressive of all fortresses the Spanish crown erected overseas. Yet it is one of the city’s least-visited attractions, which I attribute to its location in Callao. But it’s definitely worth a visit and, while you’re in the neighborhood, you can also visit La Punta. Tours can last 2 hours, the ticket costs 4-5$USD (or 15 soles) and it's open from 9am to 4pm.
