Piazza della Signoria is the seat of civil power and the heart of the city’s social life. The square hosts the Loggia dei Lanzi (so called because here the Lanzichenecchi camped in 1527), which was used to host many official ceremonies of the Florentine Republic; here we can see many sculptures including marble lions, Perseus by Benvenuto Cellini, the Rape of the Sabine, Patroclus and Menelaus, Hercules, the centaur Nessus by Giambologna and much more. In the square you can see also the buildings of the Tribunale della Mercanzia, Uguccioni Palace, the equestrian statue of Cosimo I De Medici and the famous fountain of Neptune. PALAZZO VECCHIO is the heart of the civil power; it is a wonderful examples of 14th century civil architecture, surmounted by the majestic tower of Arnolfo. The palace today still houses several municipal offices (including the first citizen’s office) while the remaining rooms are used as museums open to the public, such as the splendid Salone del Cinquecento (Hall of the Five Hundred).
