Take a self-guided walk amongst the tunnels, batteries and army barracks built on the headland to protect Auckland from feared Russian invasions with while enjoying a breath-taking view back at the city. A short documentary film plays on a loop between 8.30am and 4pm.
North Head Historical Reserve is considered to be the most significant historical coastal defence site in New Zealand.
Visiting this historic park is a fantastic place to view the harbour, port, gulf island and the city from this wonderful clifftop position.
Maungauika is a volcano forming a headland called North Hea in the suburb of Devonport. It has sweeping views over the harbour and the Hauraki Gulf, since 1885 the head was mainly used by the military as a coastal defence installation, which left a network of accessible old bunkers and tunnels as its legacy, forming part of the attraction.
