Zamimpilo (on the N2 towards St. Lucia) A community run farmer's and craft market, this is the best shopping experiences in Zululand. It is open during daytime, 7 days per week. Local women have established a large produce and craft market, getting their merchandise from established vegetable gardens and African craftsmen and selling in order to support their families and send their children to school. Zulu basketsSomething special that you can buy at the market are Zulu baskets. Each basket is lovingly handcrafted in the northeast coastal and inland areas of KwaZulu Natal. Only natural fibres, materials and dyes are used to construct these unique treasures. Most of the people in this region are subsistence farmers living in traditional Kraals, areas bordered by acacia sticks that encircle traditional family dwellings. The age-old tradition of basket weaving is usually passed down from grandmother to granddaughter. This helps to preserve Zulu culture as the grandmothers have the opportunity to recite oral history and stories to the younger generations as they all weave together.
