Olhão, ("oll-yow") is one of the largest ports in the Algarve. It is a historic town that developed around the fishing industry. In 1882, the first canning factory opened tinning sardines and tuna; an industry that quickly spread to become the Algarve's main source of income. Olhão is 15 minutes drive from Casa Veronica and is a lovely mix of historic vs modern, tourism vs local. At the local seafood market you can buy seafood as well as local produce. After exploring the market sit back and enjoy a beer while watching the tide ebb and flow. Look out for the Olhão Summer Seafood Festival and traditional festivals such as the Procissão do Senhor dos Passos (Procession of the Lord of the Steps) and the Blessing of the Sea. Olhão has many restaurants and bars, the best restaurants seem to be on the streets in the old part of town.
