Three-hour SUP excursions for beginners take you gently upriver by the incoming tide past iconic sights such as Kew Gardens, Syon House, and Richmond Lock, with a stop at a riverside cafe while you wait for the tide to turn. The stretch of river from Kew Bridge to Richmond is beautiful. Wetsuits are provided, but there’s little chance of falling in as the boards used for beginners are wide and very stable. And if you do, don’t worry: I’m an ecologist, and the Thames is one of the cleanest rivers flowing through a city in the world.

Situated under the arches of Kew Bridge, this is a paddle-boarding school located on the water's edge. Trips and lessons either head towards Hammersmith or Richmond, depending on the direction of the tide - either way you will get fantastic views of West London from the Thames. There are four outstanding riverside pubs and a Cafe Rouge within a few minutes walk, and the wonderful Hammonds Delicatessen, selling delicious food and excellent coffee - with a 10% discount for paddlers, and a £1 hot drink of your choice if you bring a reusable mug.
