With nearly a million acres, the park protects a vast wilderness, and several distinctly different ecosystems, including glacier-capped mountains, old-growth temperate rain forests, and over 70 miles of wild coastline.

It takes about 3 hrs to drive Hurricane Ridge, the most popular entry point for the Olympic NP. A cafeteria & a Visitor Center serve the area. In the summer there are nice trails to follow from here. It's another hour to get to Lake Crescent, another must see location in the area. Look for Crescent Lodge for food options and for the best views of the lake; kayaking and other water activities from here. If you want to close the circle it's another 45 minutes to Forks (from the Twilight saga), and many hiking trails begin from the area both from the NP and from the State Forests surrounding the town. From Forks back to Olympia it's faster to keep on driving South on 101 till you reach 12 East.
