Such a fun lava tube cave. Open spring-early fall. Dress warm (it's cool inside) and have fun seeing how far you can go. This is a place I remember fondly visiting as a child... and a place that my own kids have enjoyed. Just across the highway from Sunriver.
From the top of Lava Butte you can see the flow of lava. During spring and summer there's a shuttle but the fall and winter you have to hike the paved trail to the top.
Part of Newberry National Monument...Learn about the caldera that surrounds Central Oregon as you stroll on paved and gravel paths throughout the lava flow and explore caves. Take a jacket in the cave it can be cold down there.
If you want a very unique experience, drive to the lava river cave where you can take a self - guided tour into the lava tubes. Keep warm! Even in summer the caves are about 42 degrees Fahrenheit. Check out the US Forest Service's Lava River Cave website for further details before going.
