Panama Viejo is the original site where the city was founded in 1519. Located about a 15- to 20-minute drive out of the city towards Tocumen International Airport, this historical sight is worth the effort to visit. The 14 remaining ruins are spread out over an area about 1.5 kilometers long.
I used to play as a kid around the ruins, enjoying the climbing and the vibes... Not very conscious of the impact on the ruins. Today the area is enclosed, well preserved and you can really feel how was it living in this pre colonial town.
Panama Viejo is the remaining part of the original Panama City, the former capital of Panama, which was destroyed in 1671 by the Welsh privateer Henry Morgan. It is located in the suburbs of the current capital.
