The Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat, the oldest Marian shrine in Croatia, which is daily visited by numerous pilgrims both from Croatia and abroad.
Church of Our Lady of Trsat and franciscan monastery. During his third visit to Croatia, Pope John Paul II honoured Rijeka with his presence over five days and in front of church is great sculpture of him. Also you must visit cloister.
According to local legend, the Trsat Shrine was founded in 1291, when angels carrying the Holy House (where the Archangel Gabriel visited the Virgin Mary) from Nazareth dropped it here. The main attraction is the Chapel of Votive Gifts, filled with valuable tokens, including gold, silver, and jewels, donated by the faithful as a way of giving thanks.
