Gateway to the wild wild west! Features Judge Parker's (the Hangin' Judge) Courthouse Museum. This is also the site of the original Fort Smith. The last fort before crossing the Arkansas River and entering (Oklahoma) Indian territory. There is a nice park with wide paved walking paths. This historic site is also adjacent to the Harry E Kelly Park and amphitheater, and Miss Laura's Visitors Center and Historic Brothel. This walking trail also begins a long trail system that follows the Arkansas River for several miles to Fort Smith Park in north Fort Smith.

If you're a history buff, this is the place to be! The historic site in downtown Fort Smith is one of the more history-rich spots in the area. You can tour an old courthouse, walk the outline of a confederate fort wall, or take a look at old hanging gallows made famous by Judge Isaac Parker. To get the full effect, there is quite a bit of walking involved - so going in the heat of summer wouldn't be the best idea. There is also a small museum that spotlights the history of Fort Smith - it's at 320 Rogers Avenue. They have an old-fashioned Coca Cola fountain! If you work up an appetite, we would recommend Bricktown Brewery, Neumiers Rib Room, or La Huerta. All of these are within walking distance of the Historic Site.

Fort Smith borders Oklahoma, which was once Indian Territory. You can still see remains of the old fort, along with Judge Isaac Parker's courtroom, and the gallows where many outlaws were put to death by hanging. We also have the Marshall's Museum honoring U.S. Marshalls over the years. There is an annual biker rally - the Steel Horse Rally - which brings in lots of bikers every spring. Lots of great restaurants, shopping, big water park in the summer months!

The historic site includes a barracks built in 1851 and a jail that was used to house some outlaws of the west. There's a lot of great history centering around this site including the trail of tears and the civil war.
