Migishi Kotaro Museum of Art is located in the city of Sapporo, Hokkaido. The gallery collection consists mainly of artworks by Migishi Kotaro, a self-taught painter born in Sapporo in 1903. He is regarded as a pioneer of avant-garde art. He died at the young age of 31, but during the short period of 12 years in which he was painting, his style went through many changes, and later in life he produced a number of surrealist works. The collection was donated by Migishi’s family after his death, and the gallery opened on 1 July 1983, exactly fifty years after he passed away. White walls, a glassy lobby, and a light gray interior create a space befitting an artist with a love for the modern.
