One of the most serene places on the island! Set amidst stunning scenery, this ruin was a monastery and the site of a Viking settlement before that.
A quiet spot that's worth the short walk from the road. A monastery was founded here in the AD 500s. It was subsequently abandoned during Viking raids around AD 790, and then in the 1100s was built a parish church that was in use until the Protestant Reformation of 1560.
Just one of the many beautiful walks on the island to an ancient monastery and church with stunning views. Many more walks and info can be found at the Discovery Centre which is in Rothesay
Put your walking shoes on and head to the south end of the island and visit the ruins of St. Blanes Chapel. This lovely church ruins dating back to 1200s sits nestled in a valley at the southern end of Bute and boasts views that stretch as far as the Isle of Arran and the Holy Isle.
