---Our Northwoods Getaway home borders Captain Cook Park, which abounds with moose and wildlife. The park has a public boat launch on Stormy Lake. There are also small trout, numerous ducks and loons on this lake. (6 minute drive) ---The Captain Cook State Recreation Area, is a 3,460-acre state park that is one of the main draws for visitors to the area. This quiet state recreation area encompasses forests, lakes, rivers, and wide beaches along Cook Inlet and features incredible views of the Alaska Range volcanoes. The state recreation area is home to a campground, hiking trails, boat launch, even a bathhouse and a swimming area on Stormy Lake, which is also a good spot for paddling and fishing in the summer and ice fishing in the winter. ---One of our favorite beach walks is accessed at the Bishop Creek parking area. Proceed to a 1/4 mile long walking path to the Cook Inlet shoreline. This is a very pleasant and gentle walk with sand & gravel at the high tide areas. (3 minute drive). ---Another great scenic walking area is at the Captain Cook campground, which also offers beach access and a wonderful 3/4 mile trail through the woods. (8 minute drive) ---It is noteworthy that Cook Inlet has the highest tides in the United States, with tidal rise & fall ranges up to 40 vertical feet. ***Winter is a great time of year to view the Northern Lights, go ice fishing, snow-shoeing or cross-country skiing. The experience of quiet solitude without the total absence of noise and general human pollution is unparalleled.

At the end of the road! Take the Kenai Spur Hwy out to the end of Nikiski/North Kenai. There is a park with picnic benches and you can walk down to the beach and stroll during low tide. Can be windy at times - even on a sunny day so bring a windbreaker!
Capt Cook State Park is a local favorite hangout. Lots of campfires with s’mores happen here! Go check it out.
