Takalik Abaj is an archaeological site of the pre-Hispanic Mayan culture. It is located in the municipality of El Asintal Retalhuleu in southern Guatemala. This Tak'alik Ab'aj Ecological Park is distinguished from other sites in Mesoamerica in the continuity of its development for many centuries, sharing its values with the Olmec culture at its beginning and reaching its peak in the development of the Mayan culture. Due to its strategic location of natural passage between the altiplano and the coastal plain it was key in the system of the great commercial routes during the Middle and Late Preclassic. The long and vigorous history of Tak'alik Ab'aj that lasted for 1700 years (from 800 B.C. to 900 A.D.) Takalik Abaj es un sitio arqueológico de la cultura maya prehispánica. Se encuentra en el municipio de El Asintal Retalhuleu en el sur de Guatemala. Este parque Ecológico Tak'alik Ab'aj se distingue de otros sitios de Mesoamérica en la continuidad de su desarrollo durante muchos siglos, compartiendo a sus inicio valores con la cultura olmeca y alcanzando su apogeo en el desenvolvimiento de la cultura maya. Por su ubicación estratégica de paso natural entre el altiplano y la planicie costera fue clave en el sistema de las grandes rutas comerciales durante el Preclásico Medio y Tardío.
