Beverley Minster Roof Tour Experience
Your two volunteer guides will meet you inside the Minster. Over the hour and a half, they'll introduce you to the characters in history responsible for the building of such an iconic and impressive Medieval minster. After a short walk around the ground floor, you'll be guided up a narrow, spiral stone staircase into the roof of the building. There you'll discover the incredible feats of engineering from almost a thousand years ago that hold this building together, the hidden wall in the roof, a giant hamster wheel that helps to reveal a hole in the church ceiling where you can peer down 70 feet to the ground floor. You discover what brought thousands of pilgrims to this church from 700AD onwards and through this church and its own intimate history, you'll also learn about the history of England.
The tour is all within the dramatic loft of the church. We don't go outside onto the roof itself as there is no safe way to take people out there.
Silver ring making in a jewellers studio
I will show you how to make your own sterling silver ring or bangle from scratch. We will start by working out a design and the size needed first in copper wire or sheet, and how to create textures using a rolling mill, hammers or punches. I will show you how to correctly use a jeweller's piercing saw to cut the metal. After annealing the metal using a blow torch, you'll form the ring or bangle, using a mallet to shape it to the mandrel. I will demonstrate how to solder the join, and then you'll get a go! You will make the final piece in silver to your own personal design. And then it gets a final finish burnished, matt or shiny... and you get to put it on and it's yours to keep...or give to someone special as a thoughtful gift.
Other things to note

Sketch Whitby
Sketching around Whitby is a unique way to get to know the beautiful town, and a wonderful way to take a memory of your visit home with you. You will be drawing on location in a secluded spot, and work in a small sketch book that will be yours to keep. Its a lovely way to unwind and practice a little mindfulness !
We will start with a short guided walk up and down pretty, less frequented passageways and steps with a little local history. We end up in an area with beautiful panoramic views of Whitby. This is a good base with plenty of public seats, away from the general hum drum, but sketchers could work in the vicinity if they chose. I may give a short demonstration if necessary, show examples and also have some drawing aids up my sleeve in case you are a little rusty. I can give as much help as you need. We will work with a selection of materials including pens, pencils and watercolour paints. If the weather is rainy, we can work at the band stand nearby which has a roof, and also has lovely views.
Other things to note

Join me for a circular walk on Mam Tor - The Mother Hill
We will firstly meet at Odins cave the oldest documented mine in Derbyshire and is thought to be the oldest lead mine in England. This is a great starting point for our circular walk which will take us along the A625 road that was abandoned in the 70’s due to mining and the land slide.
This walk is one of the most popular routes in the peak district National Park where we will overlook the stunning Hope Valley on one side and the whole of Edale, Kinder Scout to the Derwent moors on the other.
Throughout our hike and upon reaching the summit there will be opportunities for videos, photographs and rest stops. We then continue along the great ridge through the area known as Hollins cross. These paths are located at the junction from Mam Tor crossing from Edale to Castleton. At this point we will continue along to Back Tor finally descending into the beautiful village of Castleton.
Here in Castleton you will have up to an hour to take in the unique atmosphere and enjoy the numerous cafés, tea rooms and pubs before heading off back to our starting point which will take around 30 minutes. All in all our walk should take around 4 hours. It would be lovely to have you join me to enjoy this walk as much as I have over the last 10 years. When we have finished our day together, please share your experiences gained today.
There is also a shorter version of this walk on my page.
The Manchester Food Tour
We'll be exploring the cobbled streets of Ancoats and the Northern Quarter on this "Canals to Canapes food tour."
The aim is to show you a different side of Manchester and to showcase some of the food heroes that live and work here.
We'll start off in an area commonly described as one of the UK's coolest places to live. Canal side mills and factories are now apartments, bars and restaurants. Where cotton used to be unloaded and factories were teeming with workers is now an area known for food, drink and culture.
Strolling around the area we'll talk about the Industrial Revolution and how this area was the beating heart of it all. We'll tell stories about the gangs that owned these streets, what life was like for the workers and how the area has changed over time.
Food is never far away on this tour. We'll visit one of the city's best bakeries and meet the bakers behind the bread.
We'll stop in at locally run, independent food buisnesses and try their dishes. Supporting our food heroes.
Moving on to the Northern Quarter we'll pass by hipster record stores, some of the best coffee shops and even get a sneak look into a hidden art centre.
We'll savour the best Indian flavours, delicious Italian bites and a unique Manchester dessert. Please come hungry and ready for fun.
